Food for the Gods: Chinese New Year
Occasions are created to commemorate what other people did or have. People like to celebrate occasions by going to place such as church, restaurants and parks. Others opt to stay at home to celebrate with their family, friends and other love ones. Aside from celebrating it by programs, the hosts or family prepare various foods to be enjoyed by everyone.
One of the celebrations wherein food is as important as the celebration itself is the Chinese New Year. Chinese food considered lucky by Chinese is being served in this two-week celebration that is also known as the Spring Festival. Different Chinese food is served because of several purposes.
It can be served because of the way the food is being presented. Examples of these are spring rolls either fried or steamed --- because it is said to resemble gold, an important factor in terms of wealth for the Chinese --- also steamed clams are served for they are believed to resemble coins.
Another purpose of serving food during Chinese New Year is because of the way the name sounds in their native tongue. Examples of these are the following: fruits like tangerine and orange are evidently present during this celebration for their names sounds like luck and wealth in Chinese, respectively while pomelo sounds like “to have” in Chinese; also lettuce wraps are present for the Chinese name sounds like rising fortune.
Also present in Chinese New Year is a local Chinese food called sticky rice cakes. The sticky rice cake symbolizes different things like rich and sweet life, family reunion and abundance for the year to come.
